COVID Update
As in many countries, we are seeing an increase in Covid cases following the summer break when everyone needed to get outside and enjoy our beautiful province. Like other schools and universities, UBC has re-opened but with almost all courses taking place online this fall and again next winter. The ELI building remains closed for now and we’ll update you as soon as that changes.
ELI Programming
Over the summer we ran English for Academic Purposes Online with 95 students. The nationality mix included Chinese as by far the largest group then Koreans and Japanese, and 1 or 2 students from each of Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Italy. The student feedback, and the number who successfully completed their courses was very positive. The following comment reflects typical student experiences:
The instructors are very kindly and constantly encourage us. I’m an introvert, but I’m gradually overcoming my fear of communication and am actively participating in the class… I have learned a lot in this course.
We also launched our first Global Citizenship through English Online program with a group of Japanese & Mexican university students. Here are the comments from some of the students:
I found the advantage of the online course, such as the lower cost and chatting room (even if I couldn’t hear enough, I could check my understanding on the chat)
