June 22 – Vaccine updates for travel to Canada
Dear Fanshawe student,
The Canadian government has announced that effective July 5 at 11:59 p.m., fully vaccinated travellers arriving in Canada will not be subject to the federal requirement to quarantine or be required to take a COVID test on day 8.
To be considered fully vaccinated, a traveller must have received the full series of a vaccine, or a combination of vaccines, accepted by the Canadian government at least 14 days before coming to Canada. Currently, the Canadian government accepts the Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccines. Travellers must provide documentation supporting their vaccination in English, French, or with a certified translation.
What to do before you travel – Vaccinated Students
Students who meet the vaccination requirements outlined above and want to travel to Canada will need to follow these steps before arrival:
- Gather your vaccine documents (showing your name, vaccine type, number of doses, and date of vaccination)
- Create a quarantine plan in case you test positive at the airport on arrival (private bedroom required)
- Submit your COVID-19 Readiness Form at least 5 days before you travel to Canada. The COVID-19 Readiness Form for vaccinated students will be available on June 30
- Get a COVID test within 72 hours of your flight to Canada (must test negative)
- Submit your arrival information via the ArriveCan app at least 24 hours before you travel to Canada
FAQs
Q: Do fully vaccinated students need to quarantine? What is required when they enter Canada?
A: Students who are fully vaccinated (by 1 of the 4 vaccines recognized in Canada) at least 14 days before they travel will not need to quarantine after arrival in Canada, unless they test positive at the border on arrival. If negative, students can immediately go to their regular accommodation.
Q: Is Fanshawe still providing free transportation from Toronto to London?
A: Yes, Fanshawe will provide a free shuttle from the Toronto airport to your local accommodation (in London or the GTA.) The shuttle service is free for students and immediate family members travelling with them.
Q: What is a suitable quarantine plan? How do I present it? Why do I need it?
Vaccinated travellers will have to take a COVID test at the airport on arrival. If that test result is positive, then you will need to quarantine for 14 days. All vaccinated travellers must create a quarantine plan in case they test positive on arrival. A suitable quarantine plan means having a private bedroom and bathroom available in your accommodation, and the ability to stay separated from anyone else in the unit.
Q: When can I travel?
Students currently studying in the summer 2021 term can arrive after July 5 and take advantage of this exemption. Students who will begin their studies in September 2021 should not arrive before August 2, 2021. Students in online programs for Fall 2021 can arrive any date after August 2, 2021. Students in blended programs (with in-person classes) for the Fall 2021 term must arrive between August 2 – 22, 2021.
Q: What if I have a different vaccine or only one dose?
A: Then you are not considered to be fully vaccinated and must follow the current testing & quarantine requirements including three days at government-approved hotel, and finishing the remaining 11 days at a Fanshawe partner hotel.
Q: Do I have to be vaccinated to enter Canada?
A: No! Unvaccinated travellers can enter Canada. They must follow the quarantine & testing requirements including three days of quarantine at a government-approved hotel, and finishing the remaining 11 days at a Fanshawe partner hotel.
