I hope you are doing well and enjoying your summers as we head into fall.
We will be starting classes next week and through Jumpstart (our orientation program) we have already started welcoming students online to UBC. Our President, Santa Ono, has made the announcement that while we continue to look for face to face opportunities, Term 2 (Jan-Apr 2021) classes will also mostly be online. With the safety of our students, faculty, and staff being our first priority, UBC continues to work with health authorities on safely opening up campus at the appropriate time. As mentioned, most Term 2 courses will be online with a few exceptions for example in Theatre, Film, the School of Music, and health sciences. Individual faculties will be reaching out to students with more information once the details come together.
Entry Into Canada
Canadian boarders do remain closed for non-essential travel which means for many students, they are still not able to enter Canada. However, those students who had been granted study permits before March 18th and meet certain requirements may be able to cross the border. Reasons for students crossing the border can now include internet connectivity limitations and time zone challenges. With the pre-March 18th requirement, this would mostly be for your continuing students. For the most up to date information, please refer to the Canadian immigration website.

Those of you who have students who were interested in or planning to come as Visiting Students in Term 2 may be wondering what the options for these students are. Students who wish to change their application to Summer 2021 (May-Aug) or Winter 2021 (Sep-Dec, Jan-Apr 22) may do so without having to submit another application. I will send another email to those partners with visiting students with details on the process of changing a student’s application.
Fall Recruitment for the 2021 Intake
Our team is looking forward to working with all of you in a new way to connect with prospective students this fall. I know we have reached out to you to plan our events which include online information sessions, workshops, webinars, social media campaigns, virtual/blended fairs, virtual school visits, and so forth. I see this as a great opportunity to try some new ideas on how to connect with students in this environment together with you, our partners. I think we are all looking forward to seeing what we can do this year!
