The following immigration information will clarify the authorization for international students to travel to Canada on or after October 20, 2020 based on the Order in Council (OIC). To be granted entry, students must be travelling for a non-discretionary purpose (if you are studying online – your travel to Canada is considered essential (non-discretionary)) and must be attending a designated learning institution (DLI) with a COVID-19 readiness plan approved by their province or territory as listed on IRCC’s website. MacEwan University is on that list.
International students who enter Canada will undergo the necessary health checks and must quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Canada. Therefore, we require all international students who will be quarantining in the private accommodation to email [email protected] their quarantine plan for revision. This quarantine plan is mandatory, even if you have no symptoms. If you don’t have a plan, you should not travel to Canada. Otherwise, you may not be allowed to enter the country. A border services officer will determine if you can enter the country. We do not recommend students who are not enrolled in classes in Fall 2020 to travel to Canada earlier than December to start their program in January 2021 as their travel can be considered non-essential.
MacEwan International staff will be conducting virtual check-ins with all international students twice per week during their quarantine periods and bi-weekly after students have completed their initial quarantine period until the end of the academic year. You must join these virtual meetings every Tuesday and Friday at 12 pm by clicking on the below link:
The penalties for not following your quarantine plan once you’re in the country can include:
- Fine of up to $750,000
- 6 months of jail time
- being found inadmissible, removed from Canada and banned from entering for 1 year
As soon as you finalize your travel plans you must fill out or update the below form. It is mandatory for every student coming to Canada.
If you are currently enrolled in Fall 2020 classes and is planning to travel to Canada before December 2020, please request an explanation and term enrolment and account summary letter.
MacEwan University will provide a free taxi service to students who will be arriving in Edmonton from abroad. You need to register using Google Form (link below) at least 48 hours prior to your arrival to receive this free service.
For questions, please email [email protected] to book an appointment.
