Can students travel to Canada in Winter 2021?
The majority of Winter 2021 programs will be online. Some specialized programs will be offered partially in-person, and we will be reaching out to students in these programs individually with further information.
As of October 20, 2020, some designated learning institutions (DLIs) are now able to reopen to international students who aren’t currently in Canada. Douglas College’s COVID-19 readiness plan has been approved by the province of British Columbia and we will be able to receive international students from outside of Canada who have been approved for a study permit. Please see the list of DLIs on the IRCC website.
What is required for the student to travel to Canada?
All international students planning in travelling to Canada should clearly understand the government policy before making any travel plans. Douglas College Student Services team has outlined travel eligibility requirements and self-isolation accommodation options. Students must submit their Quarantine Plan to Douglas College at the link above in order to receive a Travel Support Letter. The ultimate authority allowing students into the country rests with the Canadian Border Services Agency.
Can students start their studies online, outside of Canada?
Yes. The Government of Canada and Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed that students may begin their classes while outside of Canada and can complete up to 50% of their program via distance learning. Please regularly check the IRCC website for additional or future updates.
What are student’s next steps?
Given that your program is confirmed to be delivered online, we understand that students may be evaluating their options for starting classes in Winter 2021. Last week, we emailed the mandatory survey to our students and asked them to choose one of three options before Friday, October 30th, 2020.
The three options within the survey include:
1) Starting the program online (inside or outside of Canada) in Winter 2021
2) Deferring to the next available intake (Summer or Fall 2021)
3) Canceling the application and requesting a full refund of the deposit.
We understand that some students prefer to wait until classes return to a fully in-person format so we are providing some flexibility to our refund and deferral policy. Refund requests received after October 30th will be subject to our regular refund and deferral policy.
