Quarantine

As part of the Quarantine Act, international students must self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Canada. We have created a Quarantine Plan that follows the rules laid out by the Canadian Federal and British Columbia Governments, while also prioritizing Saanich International students’ wellbeing. The current travel restrictions are in place until June 30, 2020. We are waiting to see what updates will follow on or leading up to June 30^th and of course inform you accordingly.

Quarantine at Homestay

At this time and with the number of international students we are currently expecting, it is Saanich International’s intention to have incoming international students spend the 14-day quarantine in a Saanich International Student Program (SISP) homestay. We have a group of dedicated host families who are willing, ready and very motivated to facilitate the quarantine, and welcome a student into their family. Availability of this option may change if the number of students coming in September increases beyond current expectation, while the Quarantine Act remains active.

What will Self-Quarantine Look Like?

During the 14-day quarantine, students will make use of their comfortable private room and private bathroom facility. Their host family will cook their food and bring this to their room. We are training host families prior to the students’ arrival in ways to creatively include the student in their family life during this quarantine. This can include playing (online) games from a distance, FaceTime during meals or family nights, chatting from a distance with the door open, spending time outside in the yard while keeping the appropriate distance, etc. There are rules which must be followed to comply with Federal and Provincial Quarantine requirements and SISP is doing everything possible to ensure international students feel as supported, included and welcome as possible.

 Quarantine Fee

Facilitating self-quarantine for a student who has just travelled internationally, brings additional risks cost and care. In order to support homestay families in this undertaking, a $300 CAD Quarantine Fee will be required per student to secure a spot in a SISP homestay.

 Quarantine Plan

It is mandatory that international students do the following before arriving in British Columbia:

• Submit a BC Self-Isolation Plan

• • Our Homestay Team will send a scan of the PDF version of this document with key contact information filled in
  • Students will need to go online and submit a web version of this form 1-2 days before departure

• Download and complete the ArriveCAN App (available for iPhone and Android)
  The Information Package will include detailed instructions for both of these requirements.  

Arrival

SISP will be flexible regarding arrival dates understanding flights will be difficult to arrange. Students can arrive on or after August 24, 2020. If students arrive on August 24^th, they will complete their quarantine before school starts on September 8^th. There will be a “soft start” to the school year, meaning that students who are still quarantining when school starts will be accommodated. Any additional nights spent in SISP homestay in August prior to September 1^st, will be prorated at $31 per night. Please have your students arrive no later than September 1^st.

 Orientation

Unfortunately, the self-quarantine does affect this year’s orientation. Orientation will still happen, but through an online model. Students will have daily sessions with school-based advisors and SISP staff, covering everything we would usually cover in our orientation sessions.
 
Medical (GuardMe)

GuardMe will insure  students as normal and policies remain unchanged. If an insured student is diagnosed with a new illness when they are in Canada, including COVID-19, they are eligible for medically necessary treatment as per the normal terms and conditions of their policy. There is no pandemic exclusion, in case this also helps.
