Turn your two-year diploma into a 4-year bachelor’s degree in as few as 16 months with our Degree Completion Program…

To assist in the career advancement of adults into supervisory and management positions in their chosen fields, DeVry has developed a Degree Completion Program as part of our Business Operations Degree Program.

The Degree Completion Program is designed to complement the student’s previous two-year diploma program education to produce graduates with the following characteristics:

  • Critical thinking skills to identify and evaluate existing processes, identify needs, and structure business approaches by using established methodologies and standards.
  • Applied research and problem-solving skills, including presenting recommendations through comprehensive reports, communicating effectively both orally and in writing, and working effectively in leadership and support roles in a team environment.
  • Supervisory and management skills needed to effectively lead and support others in a technical specialty area.

How long will it take to complete the degree requirements?

Normally, a student with a two-year diploma from a community college would very likely be able to complete the Degree Completion Program plan of study by attending full-time in four terms or less.

A full-time load is usually between 15 and 19 credit hours per term, which is about four or five courses each term.

With DeVry’s year round teaching schedule, a full-time student can complete four 15-week terms in one year and four months. A student taking half a full-time load could complete the program in approximately two years and eight months.

If I have a two-year diploma from a recognized Canadian institution, how many courses would I have to take?

The number of courses you would need to take to complete your degree depends largely on your grades in your two-year diploma program. If you passed all your diploma courses with the equivalent grade of 70% or better, you probably will have to take about twenty courses or less.

What types of courses would I need to take?

The program is divided into four areas:

  • General Education
  • Business, Management and Technology
  • Technical Specialty
  • Electives

Students must complete a minimum number of credit hours in each area by transferring credit from their previous diploma program to a maximum of 60 credit hours, and by taking a combination of required and optional courses at DeVry.

Are all the courses available in a classroom during the day? Evenings? Online?

All Business Operations courses except some of the Areas of Study courses, which are available online, are offered in our classrooms during the day and, on a rotational basis, in the evenings. As well, all required and optional courses are available online through DeVry in a Mix and Match format. In this format, at least 50% of the courses must be taken each term on the Calgary campus, day or evening, while the remainder can be taken online.

How does the transfer credit assessment process work in the Degree Completion Program Plan of Study?

Every Degree Completion Program student’s situation is different. Degree Completion Program students have different two-year diplomas with different grades, they have different preferences for DeVry course options, and they may progress through their courses at different rates. It is therefore very important that each Degree Completion Program student actively and fully participates in the academic advising process, which is usually conducted by a program coordinator and subject to the approval of the program dean.

As soon as possible after a student has completed the application process, the academic advising will be arranged. In most instances, the academic advising consists of a conversation with a program coordinator of about one-half to one hour in length.
